We are seeking an experienced General Counsel to join a high-growth financial services business in Sydney.
This is a genuinely hands-on senior legal role, providing the opportunity to take ownership of the legal function and work directly with the CEO, Board, Executive team and senior stakeholders . You will operate at the intersection of legal, regulatory, lending and commercial strategy, advising the business on complex matters while helping support its continued growth.
The Opportunity:
As General Counsel, you will be the primary legal advisor to the CEO, Board and Executive team, providing commercially focused advice across the organisation.
You will have broad exposure across lending, financial services regulation, treasury, funding, securitisation, corporate governance and commercial contracting .
Key responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the primary legal advisor to the CEO, Board and Executive team.
- Owning and leading the legal function independently.
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating loan agreements, vendor agreements and commercial contracts .
- Providing legal advice across lending, treasury, sales and broader business initiatives.
- Supporting funding arrangements, treasury transactions and securitisation matters , including managing external legal advisers.
- Advising on corporate governance, risk management and internal policies.
- Overseeing legal and regulatory compliance frameworks and schedules.
- Managing disputes, litigation and external dispute resolution processes.
- Advising on Australian financial services and consumer credit legislation, including the Corporations Act, ASIC requirements and NCCP .
- Developing and implementing legal strategies that support commercial objectives.
- Identifying emerging legal and regulatory risks and providing pragmatic solutions that allow the business to move forward confidently.
- Building trusted relationships across the executive team and wider business.
You will be an experienced financial services lawyer who combines strong technical legal capability with commercial judgement and executive presence .
Ideally, you will bring:
- Australian legal qualification and admission to practice, with a current NSW practising certificate .
- 8+ years' PQE , with experience gained within banking, financial services, lending or a related regulated environment.
- Strong experience across financial services regulation, lending and consumer credit .
- Sound knowledge of NCCP, AML/CTF and Australian regulatory frameworks .
- Experience with loan documentation, funding arrangements, treasury and/or securitisation will be highly regarded.
- Strong corporate governance and risk management capability.
- Experience managing disputes, regulatory matters and external counsel.
- Excellent commercial negotiation and contract management skills.
- The confidence and maturity to provide independent advice to senior executives and the Board, including challenging decisions where required.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- A proactive, solutions-oriented approach and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
- The ability to work autonomously and take genuine ownership of the legal function.
