An established Australian financial services group operating across four connected business segments: Private Wealth, Financial Planning, a general advice publication and SMSF Administration and Accounting.
The Opportunity
Looking for the right person to lead their compliance function across four business segments. They hold their own AFSL and work with external compliance and legal consultants for complex, specialist, or high-risk matters.
The Risk and Compliance Manager will:
- Own and maintain the compliance framework across the AFSL and SMSF administration business
- Build and deliver compliance training and drive a practical, business-facing compliance culture
- Run file reviews and provide constructive feedback to advisers
- Coordinate work with external compliance advisors across AFSL, AML/CTF, SMSF and specialist areas
- Manage regulatory obligations, breaches, incidents and reporting to the CEO, Chairman and Board
- The client is not looking for a superhero. They want the right person who can grow in the role, achieve key functions, and still leverage external resources for complex areas.
The client is open to candidates from mid-to-senior levels who can grow into the role or deliver key functions with support.
Core expectations
- Experience in Australian financial services compliance, ideally with exposure to an AFSL holder
- Ideally exposure to both wholesale and retail advice models
- Practical experience writing policies and procedures that are used, not just filed
- Experience running adviser training and file reviews
- Experience with Responsible Managers on an AFSL valued but not essential
- Experience managing relationships with external compliance advisory firms valued but not essential
- Clear and concise writing – policies that read like English, not legalese
- Comfort in dealing with advisers, planners and senior leadership
- A practical implementer – can take a policy from draft, through training, into day-to-day use
- Commercially aware – understands that compliance failure is expensive and over-engineering also has a cost
- Strong judgement on when to escalate, when to coach, and when to use external expertise
- Curious about the business – interested in how advice is given, portfolios constructed and SMSFs administered
- Calm under pressure with complaints, breaches and regulator correspondence
- Self-starter who can build and grow the function
If you’re a compliance professional who wants to grow into a manager role, or an experienced manager who wants real ownership without being expected to cover every specialist function alone, we want to hear from you.
